2017-08-25 18:30:00 2017-08-25 20:00:00 America/Los_Angeles Zaytuna College Bookclub with Serge Bakalian Join the Zaytuna College Bookstore and executive director of the San Francisco Arab Film Festival, Serge Bakalian, for a talk and discussion about the groundbreaking book “Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People” by Jack Shaheen. In the book, Shaheen dissects a slanderous history dating from cinema’s earliest days to contemporary Hollywood blockbusters that feature machine-gun wielding and bomb-blowing “evil” Arabs. He documents the tendency to portray Muslim Arabs as Public Enemy #1 – brutal, heartless, uncivilized “others” bent on terrorizing civilized Westerners – and examines how and why such a stereotype has grown and spread in the film industry. We look forward to an evening of refreshments and thought-provoking discussion.RSVP: [email protected] Co-Sponsored by the Center for Islamic Studies at the Graduate Theological Union 2401 Le Conte Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709, United States Zaytuna College
