We live in an age marked by contentious debate not only about politics, but also about even more fundamental commitments, such as our varied philosophical and theological approaches and even our understanding of science and the arts. Join us for what promises to be an enlightening evening with talks by Caner Dagli and Zaid Shakir, followed by an on-stage conversation, about how we can arrive at disagreement without disengagement. 2017-10-13 14:15:00 2017-10-13 17:00:00 America/Los_Angeles Dr. Hatem Bazian and Zaytuna in Your Community in Boston: The Balfour Declaration 100 Years Later – Legacies of Colonialism, Nationalism, Anti-Semitism, and Liberation Struggles This fall marks one hundred years since the issuing of the Balfour Declaration establishing Britain's support for a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, a time that has seen constant periods of unrest, migration, and the reshaping of borders and regimes in the region. From the early confluence of British colonial aspirations and Jewish hopes for sovereignty to the ongoing refugee crisis and continuing military conflicts, there are several questions and lessons that can be gained from the interplay between economic opportunism, nationalist sentiments, international diplomacy, and the galvanizing but volatile power of identity-based politics. In this talk, we will specifically focus on the role of the Palestinian diaspora population in various parts of the world and how they have shaped the Palestinian national identity and self-determination struggle with distinguished historian Dr. Hatem Bazian. In light of the region's tumultuous last century, what roles might the diaspora population play in future negotiations and conflict resolution efforts? Join Dr. Hatem Bazian and Zaytuna in Your Community in Boston for a series of events over the weekend of Friday, October 13, 2017. On Friday Dr. Bazian will give a sermon and lead Friday prayers, followed by talks on Saturday and Sunday. The events will be held at Tufts University in partnership with the Fletcher Islamic Society, The Fares Center and two departments of the Tufts University School of Arts and Sciences.
